This is such an obvious plot hole that I'm sure it's been discussed to death, but I can't seem to find any threads which discuss it. I have actually signed up here in order to talk about this matter, so you can see how much of a sad bastard I am...
My concern surrounds the central plot, the 'geth', machines who come to the Earth every 50,000 years to wipe out all biological life. Seeing as it takes billions of years for sophisticated, intelligent beings to evolve, surely when they return to wipe out all life every 50,000 years, there won't be any intelligent life there to destroy? That is all. Im sure someone has a really good, smart-arse retort which I am most eager to hear.
EDIT: OK, so I see that there is already a thread discussing this. The first couple of retorts are deeply unsatisfactory, but I'll have a sift through the rest and see what folk are saying. Cheers.Edited By Smart Patrol on 10/22/06 18:07 |

First of all you should remove the "smart" from your username, Smart Patrole.
Secondly, why would they kill everything they could find every 50.000 years? It would be impossible to search billions and billions of planets for that purpose.
Now if you look at the ACTUAL plot that's been revieled for Mass Effect, the Geth attack civilisations, that, as I saw a dev mention, picks up signals (radiowaves) from their ships etc. Meaning that they have to have that kind of technology to even be found by the Geth!
Otherwise humans, which been around much longer then 50.000 years, would not be alive during this era, so I don't see that "plot hole" you are writing about, maybe it's just me. |
