Hot on the heels of yesterday's announced Mass Effect release date (ME is coming out in November, just incase you missed it), we can now confirm another long running subject of debate.
Mass Effect has been rated M for Mature from the ESRB.
We have always said that Mass Effect was going to be either a mature or possibly teen title and we can now go ahead and confirm that it is indeed a mature game. Mass Effect was rated Mature for violence, blood and gore, some partial nudity and some sexual themes.
So there you have it. Within 24 hours both an official release date and an official rating.

I understand what violence, blood and gore and sexual themes are, but what exactly does the ESRB see as "partial nudity".
Do things like gratuitous cleavage and "coin slots" count?
Also, I don't see language listed as one of the things. Does that mean we can look forward to hearing NPCs and Shepard saying things like "Oh, drat, I've been shot in the leg!" and "OUCHIE!" instead of swearing?
Has the Citadel Council outlawed swearing?
Edit: (P.S. I'm very glad that ME isn't going to be rated T.) _________________ The game will be in the stores on November the 42nd.Edited By Handsome666 on 07/11/07 16:41 |

Well... KOTOR didn't have any content descriptors for language, but there were still a lot of "damns" and "hells." Hopefully Mass Effect steps it up a bit. _________________ Ride the spiral 'til the end... may just go where no one's been. |

You owe me a new monitor.
And yes, those are counted as partial nudity; DOA Beach Volleyball had no violence, cursing, or blood, but walked away with an M for Mammaries. _________________ Mass Effect RPG: Click Here |

Blood and gore? That's a new one..
So long as it's not excesive, then I'll be fine. Too much can ruin a game for me.
Is the gore on a level with what was in the book?Edited By Chaos-fusion on 07/11/07 16:54 |

No system on Earth could accurately model the injuries sustained during the book. Stuff like legs being shredded by gunfire just doesn't look real. Blood and gore are tacked on to games regardless of intensity even StarCraft an RTS has "blood and gore" tags.
Anyways this is probably the worst-kept secret ever. |

A release date AND a game rating?! I feel like dancing, but since I can't dance and I'm in a public place, I'll refrain!
I hope "blood and gore" is more along the lines of Halo, and not games like Gears of War.
Though, I wouldn't mind seeing Saren get ripped in half by an angry krogan... _________________ You tried your best, and you failed miserably. The lesson is: never try.Edited By jettymasher on 07/11/07 17:13 |

Not the realism. Like limbs flying off, of them bursting into chunks when they're near explosions... That kind of thing never looks real in games, but still gory. |

The thing I hate most is the fact that despite the rating was there for around two months, the developers kept denying it until today, where really no change has happened at all. Clearly meaning that the rating that was released ages ago really was right. |

This is what I find ridiculous about the ESRB ratings system. If a game has violent elements (ie guns) it will have to be rated M because those violent elements will come out every battle, and in a 70+ hour game there will be many battles. The stupid part is that it's the same level of violence. I've seen about 10 minutes of combat from ME and if the same violence level were in a movie it would be PG-13. The enemies don't even bleed. We have become so desensitized to the M rated game that it doesn't even mean anything anymore. Does a game in which you violently devour enemies hearts, get your face drilled, see your girlfriend get violently executed, wield minions that pee on corpses, and frequently travel to hell deserve the same rating as Halo or Oblivion? I have no problem with M rated games I just think that the ESRB is a joke. _________________ "A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do." - Bob Dylan |

Let's keep the political discussion out of this thread, please. This thread is to discuss the Mature (M) rating of Mass Effect, not to spout off our personal beliefs or dictate what others should believe. _________________ Do not taunt Happy Fun Ball. |

blood and gore
I just went to the ESRB website and there is only Blood, not Blood and gore.
Just like several moths ago, btw.
