For those who may have missed the news Mass Effect has been rated Mature by the ESRB. It was rated Mature for Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes, and Violence.

This thread is a continuation of the ratings discussion that can be found here: Click Here At almost 40 pages, the old thread was getting a little bloated, so we closed that one and have continued the discussion here.

We do not yet have any ratings for regions beyond the ESRB (such as Europe). When we do know them, we will make them known on these forums.

Wow. the M rating has had people up in arms for a while now... Personally I think that if BioWare wants to make a story with violence and some sexual... well whatever and what the ESRB says is some side boobie action or as they say "the profile of a breast" thats fine. It is their game to mess around with. Either way T or M I was gunna get it.

Also it's an honor I can get 1st post on part 2 of this hot button issue

Now for the issue of kids with parents who hate seeing an M on game boxes plz listen.

Just ask your parent(s) if they would rent the game and watch you play it. I have a feeling that this is one of those games where the parent(s) would let kids play (provided you are old enough to see some brief nudity and some blood.)

Who knows, they might buy it once they see the level of M content.

The profile of a breast means and a I quote from the Webster's Dictionary...

"The outline of a persons face or figure seen from the side"

So finally the answer to the amount of nudity in the game: you can see the outline of a womans breast.

No big surprises there. After all the game is
not porn...

lol 'M' ratings, ftw!! As for nudity and violence, you probably see more of that on cable television...I can't believe this kind of discussion actually needed a part 2! How much can be said about it? xD

Ha ha ha! True, pretty much anything that can be put into an M rated game can be broadcast on TV.

However breasts can only be shown under strict rules...

Like, the woman must be nude due to climate or the customs of her people require that she lack those upper garments. And obviously she cannot be engaging in sexual activity...

This thread is not intended to be a personal soapbox or for discussion of the merits of the rating systems of other media types. It is strictly for the discussion of the Mature rating for Mass Effect. Thank you.

If i'm not mistaken, couldn't a movie containing the same content as Mass Effect have receive a PG-13 rating. I realize this discussion will be somewhat pointless given that we don't know all that will be in mass effect content wise. But we do know its M rating isn't for language, leaving us with violence, brief nudity and sexual themes.

Violence is very common in PG-13 movies. I also believe you can get away with a brief profile shot of a nude woman and sexually suggestive themes in a PG-13 movie.

According to one site I found explaining movie ratings:

"More than brief nudity will require at least a PG-13 rating, but such nudity in a PG-13 rated motion picture generally will not be sexually oriented. There may be depictions of violence in a PG-13 movie, but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence. A motion picture’s single use of one of the harsher sexually-derived words, though only as an expletive, initially requires at least a PG-13 rating. More than one such expletive requires an R rating, as must even one of those words used in a sexual context. The Rating Board nevertheless may rate such a motion picture PG-13 if, based on a special vote by a two-thirds majority, the Raters feel that most American parents would believe that a PG-13 rating is appropriate because of the context or manner in which the words are used or because the use of those words in the motion picture is inconspicuous."

The brief nudity we see in Mass Effect (from the trailer) appears to occur in a sexual context, hence probably an R rating. Add to that any sexual jokes about hot alien chicks and you've got your R rating right there. It's close though, so we'll have to see. If an M rating is the true equivalent of an R rating, the ESRB better have gotten this one right, as it'd be a shame if this game lost out on sales it could have made under a Teen rating for content that really doesn't deserve to be rated in the same category as god of war, GTA, or the darkness.

Well the M rating may have kicked some of the buyers off the market but, it may have added people on to the buyers list just cuz they want an adult game. In fact it may be, that the M rating added to the amount of money ME will make...

Alot of kids will most likely buy it anyway so I don't think it really hurt the game any.
