Quote: Posted 06/09/08 11:34 (GMT) by Gorwyn87 I don't like racism and religious thoughts as well, but I find it kind of interesting to talk about that topics and maybe to prove her wrong . Especially talking about "god" is always something special. I guess noone really thinks about a giant guy with a long beard anymore, it's more a word for the power that created all this. Liara on the other hand is just too solid and innocent for me, it's kind of boring to talk to her. I'm really curious how the Ashley romance will turn out, for the first time I chose Liara anyway because I'm always playing the good, friendly guy on the first run *g*. I'm from Germany as well, but if there's something I learned from our well-known past it is to face extreme thoughts instead of simply ignoring them. I strongly believe that humans aren't born as good or evil and that all of their decisions and views in life, in other words all the differences, are based on experiences and influences. Bioware did a good job in showing that so far (I'm mostly doing side missions in hope for a patch for the main story and didn't see much of the real game yet) with this game and Ashley is a well-designed character for that. If reality would turn out the way like in the game I guess that most of the humans would be skeptical about alien races as well. At least if they don't use their guns first *g*. Just my two cents, my opinion isn't the great correct answer of course, but I wanted to show why I prefer Ashley and that she's definitely not a bad choice for the crew. And if you don't like her there is still a completely different person. Man, english is so hard for me, I must sound like an idiot .
I believe god is an alien..lool I never tried to fight with Ashley about it..
I dont believe her hating aliens is really a racial issue if you take the time to talk to her as to the reason why..
And your English is pretty good...but what do I know im just a dumb American that only knows 1 language..lol... I tried to learn Korean/German/Spanish but all ended in failure! Spent 4 years in Germany(beautiful country),in Heidelberg but never could get German down..Edited By bes12000 on 06/09/08 19:37 |

Not sure what's the problem everyone has had with Williams I had her in my party most of the time. I like the character myself.

i always take her as well.
not only is she tough as nails, but she always has something interesting to say. not always something i agree with ("i cant tell the animals from the aliens"), but very often something entertaining all the same ("nobody lick any poles!").
also, her religiousness has been severely and outrageously overblown in this and other threads.
she mentions in a single conversation that she does in fact believe in a god. period.
she doesnt say shes a catholic, or a muslim, or a hindu, or a scientologistTM, or a follower of the Great Old Ones, or a Buddhist. just says she believes in a god.
she doesnt go around telling everyone they are sinners and preaching about damnation. she doesnt attempt to force her beliefs on anyone else.
her xenophobia is much more prominent. and its understandable that that part people might have a problem with, especially if they misinterpret it as racism.
they did this for a very big reason. throughout the game, but especially near the end game, it becomes obvious just how extremely Xenophobic or Speciesist the human race is in Mass Effect.
throughout Citidel, nearly all the humans mention how glad they are to see another human, or how there are too many aliens.
the Navigator guy on Normandy explains his personal prejudice in detail.
the Terra Prime protest on Citidel at the end forshadows how this will be featured in the second game, and just how prominent it is throughout the human race and on earth.
the whole way from the start to the end of the game, the player is given the option to express extreme Xenophobic or Speciesist personal views, and even commit total genocide of not one but two entire species with the justification that aliens should die.
and finally, Udinas comments in the final conversation tree paint a very, very grim picture of a human dominated fascist regime of Palpatineian magnatude to come, in which humans dominates the other alien races.
so Ashley is a very tame and toned down means to convey to players who do not choose those dialog options or have those views, that they do exist in the game world.Edited By boytype on 06/09/08 20:48 |

not to mention if you have high enough charm you can get her look at the bigger picture. _________________ You say jump, I say how high. You say kiss a Turlan, I say which cheek.- Chief Ashley Williams, ME |

i just think its cool that they put an evil dead reference in the game at all. <3
She even refers to her weapon as a "Boom-Stick" They really need Bruce Campbell for one role or another. _________________ I am that which grips the heart in fright, harkens night, and silences the light. |

You don't have to fear opression if you protect your civil liberties. I value a society that places individual freedom above idealistic notions such as peace and harmony. Civil liberties don't tell you what to think, how to act, or what good and evil is. It lets you decide for yourself (I'm a little existential).
Civil liberties also help prevent against the opressive majority. You should read Alxander Hamilton's Federalist #10 (acually read a summary; it's kinda hard to read).
instead of trying to make people a certain way; live in agreement with your own morals and ideas. |

@ daong^ Speaking of that, I wonder if someone will create a custom Bruce Campbell skin for Shepard. Too bad the VA of Shepard is too dead for BC's (character's) personality. Edited By Incognito JC on 06/10/08 06:09 |

I totally dig Ashley, she's probably my favorite of my party on the game. Some of the things she says are just so cynical I can't help but laugh out loud. When she makes the comment about the lake on the Citadel "Wonder if anyone ever drown in it," stuff like that. I thought her personality was a little more complex then anyone else in the game. She has strong convictions and belief, religious values, sense of duty, etc. She's more "realistic" then anyone else, at least to me.
There is also the side of the argument from the "game mechanics" perspective. She's by far the best warrior that you can find unless you go soldier with Shephard. If you don't make your PC a solder then Ash is basically the best soldier in the galaxy.
When she makes the "boom stick" reference however, that was the best of all. Props to whoever put that in, Evil Dead was a great movie and that little tribute was an awesome touch to a very very good game. Ashley is my favorite for a number of reasons, she just kicked *** in my opinion. |

I actually really liked Ashley even though she is not the type of person I would normally like. Sure, she has unpleasant quirks, but that's the things that make the character more interesting. People are not perfect.
She and Tali make for my favorite team members. |

I love the little smile after you tell Ash that the beacon incident on Eden Prime is not her fault. She is a reliable and conservative woman, with a lot of character. And her conversations with Wrex are the best. I can't get friendly with the childish characters like Liara and Tali without a story to tell. Also the 'I had a bad childhood' (Kaidan) and 'My father didn't understand me' (Garrus) stories bore me to death. So I stick with Ash and Wrex.Edited By narayan512 on 06/10/08 13:02 |

To me, Ashley is your Intergalactic Jehovah Witness Extremist.
When she saw the shrine she reponds I like to tell these Geth a thing or two about God.
I can just imagine her going door to door and ship to ship. Hello I am Ashley Williams of the Intergalactic Jehovah Witness Extremists. I saw your shrines and would like to sit down and talk to you about God. And, you do not like my views of God. Here is my Messiah the Boomstick.
This is definately a Christian friendly game. And, I am an ordained minister too. I see nothing wrong with the game at all. It is actually the most realistic game set in the future. This is far better than Star Wars or Star Trek.
I won't be surprised Christianity will rise in real life due to the game because of Intergalactic Jehovah Witness Extremist, Ashley Williams. |
