A small number of users have reported a Windows Explorer crash when right-clicking after downloading the Mass Effect 1.01 patch or the "Bring Down the Sky" downloadable content. This issue has now been resolved and any user encountering it is advised to download and install the hotfix.
Users that have already downloaded "Bring Down the Sky" or the 1.01 patch can fix this issue as follows:
1.) Download the repair file from: Click Here
2.) Extract "Repair.exe" to your desktop.
3.) Run "Repair.exe"
4.) When complete, right-clicking will no longer cause Windows Explorer to crash.
Users that have not yet downloaded the 1.01 Mass Effect Patch or "Bring Down the Sky" can simply download the 1.01a update from: Click Here
Edit: Please note that the "Bring Down the Sky" installer now includes the fix for this issue.

Can you offer some info on what repair.exe does to fix the issue? Does it only change game-related files, registry entries, etc? _________________ And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad These dreams in which I'm dying, are the best I've ever had |

Good news - the repair file (which is a SecuRom update) fixed the problem.
Bad news - I spent two hours dealing with this non-game related issue - lost productivity and tracking down how to fix it.
I gave EA $50 for the game, they gave me a game. Fair exchange.
Now, I want something for the two hours I wasted on this. Barring any other proposals, I want $15 and an apology.
If you patch your game and break the game - well that's disappointing and pathetic but I accept that and wait for the fix.
If you patch your game and break my Windows environment - that's unacceptable without compensation.Edited By AvenDawnbringer on 08/02/08 17:35 |

Doh!! I've just completed a full Vista installation for the first time with all my drivers, games and programs. And then I got this error. Upon googling up and down the net I finally gave up and reinstalled my OS (only installed drivers so far).
I strongly recommend testing your stuff on Vista and at least replace the patch with a new patch including a warning that says:
THIS PATCH *BEEEP* UP YOUR VISTA, PLEASE CHECK WEBSITE FOR FIX! or something like that. |

Oh.. btw. Question: I've used one installation on my XP. Now that I've installed Vista I'll probably use up my second installation. But if I didn't start the game (only installed it and patched it with 1.01) - does it count? |

Oh Bioware.... You used to be great at communicating with your customers.
What happened? It's like some big corporate entity came in and took over... oh wait. They did.
Besides comments to the contrary it would seem that Bioware support, community involvement and for God's sake... "the desire to give a damn" have vanished.
Please tell me what the patch did to my Windows installation to require a hotfix. Of course you are right to hold information back that would give anyone a window into how SecuROM works... and if it is the case that any information about what happened would do just that... well tell me that.
When Microsoft offers a hotfix there is generally, not always, but generally a very very detailed description of what caused the issue in the first place.
Some of us use our Computers for more than gaming, and others still have now used one of the most generous 3 activations that you "grant" us (in all your benevolence) in an attempt to remedy this issue. Yes, an activation, not just an install. When Explorer begins to crash folks will remove hardware, try newer or older drivers, reconfigure... and we have not been given any information as to what types of changes would require reactivation. In fact we aren't even told how many activations we have used.
Frankly, I am getting fed up with this entire arrangement. |

this is honestly one of the most rediculous side effects i have ever heard of... for a game... maybe a shotty kernel, but content...!?
i hope this is unprecedented, documented and prohibited in the future.
does the security of your intellectual property entitle you to the safety of my computer?
i suppose i did "accept" to the end user licence agreement... forget where it said "render your computer unusable" though |

Once again we - the buyers of games - are the victims of DRM and not as intended the ones who don't pay. Who probably wouldn't have this problem because cracks are designed to remove DRM.
One can only wonder how much crap the customer can take.
Perhaps one day someone will realize that making demos so the people can try a game before they decide to but it will put a damper on piracy. And just think of all that money that can be used to make games better rather than anoy the customers who pays you salary.
All that said. Mass Effect is still a great game. It's just a shame, when stuff like this happens. |

Thank you for addressing this issue and letting me format my pc twice, then I went to 64bit - lost all my nice GUI customization. Back on 32bit and luckily because of no hardware changes I didn't have to deal with EA Support to get ME activated again.
Isn't it about time that you guys just removed this nonsense? It's only causing your paying customers grief, or should I say previous customers in many cases? _________________ Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @ 3.40GHz Gigabyte EP45-UD3R ATi Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 OCZ DDR2 800 8GB (4X2GB) Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 |

From a recent MTV Multiplayer conversation with BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk:
Dr. Zeschuk: "With everything we build now, we want to have this long-term relationship with the customer and always have something for them to try."
Long-term ... At least until your three activations are used up, eh? |
