Any Windows Vista user who uses Xfire to chat with friends ingame has probably noticed that every time you try to launch the game with Xfire running, you get about 7-8 popups telling you that files are missing. It can be quite annoying, but it doesn't actually keep you from playing the game. Here's how you make it go away:
Xfire uses certain Windows shell .dll files to load its user interface when a 3D application is running. Ordinarily, those files are either called from the system32 folder, or already loaded from the game installation. Unfortunately, Mass Effect does not seem to utilize these files, and for some reason, in Windows Vista, Xfire doesn't call these files from the system32 folder (at least not when you run Mass Effect).
To fix this issue, you can just copy the following files from your system32 folder [C:\Windows\system32] to your Mass Effect binaries folder [C:\Program Files\Mass Effect\binaries]
wsock32.dll winmm.dll oleacc.dll msimg32.dll
After that, the prompt boxes will go away, and you can once again run Xfire and Mass Effect together without any problems.
Please note: You want to COPY, not move these files. This will not harm your system or game installation in any way, as Xfire is the only program that will load these files from the binaries folder. 64bit Windows users will need to copy the files from [C:\Windows\sysWOW64] into [C:\Program Files (x86)\Mass Effect\binaries]. _________________ -Eulif Davis |

Awesome. Thanks for the tip. Now if I ever play ME again, I won't have to worry about seeing those annoying errors. _________________ You think you know who you are? You have no idea. - from Crash |

I just disable it anyway because I get a huge performance hit in Mass Effect when Xfire is running. _________________ 0011010000110010 |

I've never had this issue, but then I also don't use the Xfire in-game overlay for anything, either.
For the person(s) who have cited poor performance with it running, disable the in-game overlay. That should remove any performance hit you might receive. |
