"Ammunition levels must be maintained through picking up drops from downed enemies." IGN
This completety kills it for me, so now is it going to be some rubbish resident evil shiz and we basically running round looking for ammo? Really now its all the more reason to pick classes with biotics! _________________ Mass Effect 1200/1200 "I may be drunk krogan but your ugly" --GT:LegendaryMSN-- |

WOW, and the fact that your a elite military operative that can most likely stock up your stuff before going into a mission isn't awesome ?
As far as I'm aware the only thing that you can run out of is Special weapon ammo. I don't think your normal guns run down. In all the videos shown so far your ammo counter doesn't go down while firing and only starts reducing when using missiles/special shots etc.
So don't spam special shots and you'll be fine, save em for clumps of enemies or the big ones and you will be fine. |

Uh, there's been an ammo counter for the regular guns in the last three videos since the recent "G4 exclusive" video last week.Edited By PunisherWarzone08 on 11/05/09 07:23 |

I'm fine with that but they better not make it for every gun. |

The recent vids have shown otherwise. Casey better have a good explanation. |

Yeah. As long as they have a believable explanation in the game codex it's bearable for me I guess. |

Actually grifthin is right. Nothing in the g4 video suggests having to pick up ammo in general to me. The counter in the bottom left only goes down when you use special ammo, and the counter on the gun looks like number of bullets you can fire before you have to eject your heat sink which approximates reloading. The only counter which is consistently depleted without being automatically rejuvenated is the special ammo counter in the bottom left. Those are the rounds I bet you have to pick up from enemies. That and stuff for heavy weapons, but for standard rounds I think it is still infinite but now we have something approximating a reload feature.
I haven't nitpicked the IGN videos but I'm pretty sure they show the same thing.
Okay, I looked at the ign video and in that the bottom left counter does go down more, but the guy playing is also constantly selecting special ammo off the wheel so I still say it's a special ammo counter and the counter on the gun shows heat. _________________ "Monsters are the last minority." Except, the bottom left counter doesn't change when Shepard activates different ammo powers, which means it considers all ammo types the same, not just "special" ammo. The counter on the weapon itself shows whatever your current magazine holds (interpret that as heat, if you wish). This is exactly as it should be if they planned on improving combat.
Seriously guys, even Duck Hunt had limited ammo. Unlimited ammo just makes for a boring run & gun shooter. Can you not see the element of strategy that is added when these things are limited? |

Then how do you account for the fact that the counter on the bottom left doesn't go down when Shepard is firing? It only goes down occasionally, way less often than it should if it was his overall ammo meter. _________________ "Monsters are the last minority." Guillermo del Toro |

Another "fix" where no fix was needed.
Sigh.
Why make things more generic? Virtually unlimited ammo was a core feature of the ME universe weapons. It was referred to in both codex and in-game conversations (Wrex's fight with Aleena).
Now we have reloading of heat sinks AND reloading of ammo. _________________ Who is Jacob Taylor? |

It only goes down occasionally, way less often than it should if it was his overall ammo meter. That counter only goes down when Shep changes magazines. Its a total count of his ammunition, not a real-time count. Also, whenever an ammo power is activated, you see the indicator right next to the weapon's counter. At the beginning of this video, he has no special ammo activated and the lower left counter still goes down when he reloads, which means it also includes "regular" ammo in the count. |

Ammo is a good thing.
I always found the unlimited ammo explanation of the first game preposterous. Nothing makes a combat experience more exhilarating than running out of ammo, having to switch to alternates and side arms, and generally having a pants sh*tting adrenalin charged experience. |

Precisely... I'm really not understanding peoples' complaints about this... it only adds to the game, ironically. So far, the only point I've seen mentioned is that it contradicts the codex (which it doesn't). I'd really like to know what exactly people will miss about unlimited ammo, besides having an unrealistic crutch to rely on throughout the game. |

I think the idea could work if it isn't used like every FPS out there. If you buy blocks of ammo that contain 1000+ rounds than it still fits the universe. You could then have a few of these blocks for reloads. Picking up 30 rounds from an enemy doesn't, plus it's a stupid video game crutch. No soldier ever searches enemies for ammo, nor do they look for it in the environment. They bring with them what they need.
I've always thought the Halo vision of future weapons was ridiculous. A couple hundred years from now we have personal energy shields and FTL travel, but our guns are equivalent to what we have now? Please. |
