When I read all that stuff about how the combat wasn't that great and ME2 will be improving on it, I didn't really know what people were talking about. I thought it was pretty fun.
But doing Wrex's family armor on Hardcore reminded me. So, here are some things I hated:
1. Targeting. Telling your squad to use something like Carnage took several minutes as you tried to figure out what they were actually capable of hitting. Most of the time, even if you did get a lock on an enemy, they missed because they fired at the spot of the target, and not at the target. And if you pick a target but decide you don't want it (or you were just testing to see if they could hit certain places) you have to be able to see the target or they'll fire at nothing.
It was also such a pain in the *** to try and put the targeting triangle where you wanted it. At random times, for no explainable reason, the triangle would lock on an enemy no matter how far away you tried to aim an attack.
2. Squad mates, and even Shepard sometimes, have this frustrating as hell tendency to not do what I'm ordering them to do. When this happens they usually have to move before they do what I told them to do 5 times already without success.
3. So many attacks do too much damage. Wrex has immunity, level 60 health, and barrier going and even on Hardcore enemies can take giant chunks out of his health with one shotgun blast.
Then there's rockets, sniper shots (why couldn't snipers fire normal shots? It was always assassination) and krogan melee attacks...my level 60 Adept couldn't survive 1 krogan punch on Veteran even. |

Playing the first game was figuring out how to make the game do what you wanted it to do.. or knowing when the game was going to do exactly what the hell it wanted to...
This is key to playing on the harder difficulites... although Dragon Age just seems to be one general cluster F*** when it comes to party AI... no offense guys...
I found the only real thing that helped in the first was pure simple memorization of everything in the game... Ive litterally played this game so much, that I can walk into a room on Insanity, and have everything dead within about a nice 3 minutes without even so much as a scratch...
Simply because I did such...
Set the party power usage to either Active, and let them do what they are going to do and only tend to yourself. The occasional order works better instead of trying to order them around all the time, they respond quicker..
Set the party power usage to Defense Only, so that they will only use powers when they ABSOLUTELY have to... its quite nice, you know when someone is in a pinch because theyve used a power, thus allowing you to know who to effectively help first...
Or set in on Command only, if you like to plot and command like a normal RPG...
I also found that difficulties or certain situations can be made easier by switching this feature on and off...
Target aid... turning it on high can seriously boost your killing speed in desperate situations. Or if you just want to get one of the more clonish side quests over with.
Setting it on Moderate allows the AI to do their own thing, but if you get into a pinch theyll aid you...
Turning it on low when surrounded or in desperation is possibly one of the worst things you want to do... or if you are like me and have played the game so much you just want more of a challenge... This is essentially the mode you want to go if you want the AI to do exactly what they want... sometimes its a good idea, namely Wrex handles best in this mode.
A few tips and tricks I find that help... |

IMO, if you're carrying a weapon and you don't know how to use it then, well, you shouldn't be using it. Come on, how hard is it to aim down a sight! _________________ "I've had enough of your snide insinuations!" |

The sticky-cover system. It's useful when you want to use it, but it's a hindrance when you don't want to use it. I found myself getting killed in bunker complexes mainly because Shepard decided to hug a wall when I was attempting to sprint out of dodge. |

The truth indeed, i actually thought that adding cover was a pretty innovative idea, but it had it's share of flaws, as Punisher said, you couldn't get out of cover quickly and neither could you get into cover quickly.
People can whine and complain all they want, but Gears Of War and Grand Theft Auto IV had excellent cover systems, and i would really like the implementation of blind fire in ME 3, just not as accurate as the aforementioned games. _________________ Orgulloso Fanático Venezolano De Mass Effect |

In the E3 Reveal trailer they said that they removed the sticky cover system and replaced it with more of an optional one.
Personally, most first shooters I've played have great cover systems: CoD, MoH, AA, etc.
I've been playing a lot of CoD: MW lately (I guess with the sequel coming out it pumped me up some). The most interesting part of that game, for me, is just how involved it got with the enemies throwing grenades.
You throw one, they pick it back up and toss it right back at you and vice versa. I would love to see such a system implemented in Mass Effect. It forces you, the player, to keep moving and not staying in one pace and sniping people off. The game just takes on a whole new "run and shoot" type feeling. |

Overall, combat with pretty decent...at no time did I feel frustrated.
What I would change: Have the ability to take cover a little easier & move quicker.... |

My only real gripe was the lack of reaction from enemies when they're getting fired on. You can be pumping bullets into an enemy, and he'll just stand there looking totally unconcerned. |
